Where to use shiplap

Where to use shiplap

This is hot discussion! It seems I am talking more and more with new clients, both those remodeling as well as those in new construction, about where to use wood walls or “shiplap” as it is commonly called. It seems everyone is hot for this look and I love it too!

shiplapentry

When remodeling older homes you often uncover great wood walls behind yucky old cheesecloth and wallpaper or under old sheetrock or popcorn ceiling. In our own home reno this was a recent discussion when we tore out some popcornish ceilings. But often the wood can be too rough or damaged and decisions have to be made if it can be saved or used.

Our “new old house”

We actually went over our wood ceiling with new wood so we could have pot lights, another layer of sound barrier, less dust, and cover a very damaged area of wood in the corner of the room.

So remodeling you just have to go room by room and situation by situation to decide what will work and that often determines where the wood/shiplap appears in the final design.

We all love India Hick’s dining room with this picture ledge look shown below! This actually isn’t a great photo of the ceiling but it caught my eye!

What I have been noticing is where wood is used in conjunction with sheetrock and what I have determined is it really looks good anyway: sheetrock on ceilings with shiplap wood walls OR sheetrock on walls with wood/shiplap ceilings. Or everywhere..they I notice most people don’t want it everywhere unless they are at the beach or just really really in love with it.

And here on Houzz used on ceiling and walls with coffered ceiling in next room…the flows of these treatements intrigue me.

And while I typically think of shiplap as being white it is of course done wonderful here by Phoebe Howard in gray.

And this classic Southern home below in Southern Living is one of my faves and shows how shiplap isn’t just beachy or cottagey but can be quite traditional and classy! This photo is also a good example of shiplap painted something other than white white and i like it…looks so good with the transom.

And this decorpad post shows how shiplap can work in a kitchen though I typically see and like it on kitchen ceilings.

southernliving

oh Yes another photo from Southern Living…i hate to sound Southern-centric (not really i really don’t mind;) but I do think Southerners do shiplap well…is it as common in all other regions of the country I wonder..it is very prevalent in the construction of old homes in Texas and other parts of the South is it like that everywhere, New England, midwest I wonder? Obviously we think of it as a beachy Nantucket thing. ..Main thing to remember is this was not something created by HGTV just recently, its not a trend really shiplap has been around a long time in vernacular homes and has made its way into American design forever from casual to high end.

Where do you like to see shiplap used? On ceilings? On walls? Or both? Always painted white or a color??

I leave you with this final photo of my big shiplap project, my mom and I tackled nearly 15 years ago in our old house. Lots of little cheesecloth strings to clip. Ok i miss my office just a little!

Have y’all heard about the Southern Slipcover madness over at LS Slipcovers?

slipcovers

You know how I love LS Slipcovers from my post here! Remember this amazing chair she did for me! Can you even believe the base of that chair is from IKEA..hours of handwork and talent!

slipcovercollage2

Well if you thought “I wish they lived in my town” well now you are in luck… LS Slipcovers is visiting the Deep South! They are calling it the “Dixie Stampede” and its awesome if you live in or near one of the cities listed below. THEY ARE COMING TO YOU! Nathan and Laura and their team have so much energy and they have gotten so many requests for slipcovers in Southern states they are hitting the road to make it happen!

dixiestampede2

If you visit their KICKSTARTER page here you can learn more about the process and how to get started even if you are just interested. I had never even heard of Kickstarter, but again Laura and Nathan are so smart. The way this trip works is you commit with Kickstarter but you aren’t actually charged your deposit unless the trip “makes” and they are “for sure” coming..that way they don’t have to charge you and then refund you. Basically he process goes like this:

(1) EMAIL Nathan at LS Slipcovers with photos and dimensions of your furniture that you would like slipped. He will ask you what kind of fabric and style you have in mind and give you an ESTIMATE, their contact info is on their website here.

(2) RECEIVE ESTIMATE and if you decide it is something you want to commit too then you go onto their KICKSTARTER page HERE and “pledge” which is basically like your deposit

(3) WAIT until you here for certain their trip has met its GOAL and is def happening (kind of like waiting to see if one of those upper level classes in your major is going to “make” so you can take the class and graduate on time)

(4) Once you know for sure they are coming to your Southern city (and it looks like its happening y’all) they will INVOICE you!

(5) Then they will SCHEDULE a day to be at your house….COME TO YOUR HOME!

(6) Laura and Nathan will arrive and PINFIT your sofa with the fabric y’all have discussed and chosen. You can watch a video of the “pin fit” on the kickstarter page or their website

(7) Then y’all hug and say GOOD BYE and they go on their way with your pattern and fabric!

(8) And then you will receive in the MAIL your FINISHED SLIPCOVER!

Here is a photo of Laura pin fitting MY custom sofas made by her mother Gracie of Gracie’s Custom Interiors. What a talented family! I can’t wait to see them soon in our new home!

And here is a photo of her pin-fitting at my friend Becki’s house!

LSpinfitting

Recently she travelled to Oklahoma to work on my client Stacy’s MAMMOTH red sofa. Staci was so funny asking if it was even possible to make it look good..OH YES!

I will never get tired of watching this process! Love it! And most of all I adore Laura as her person and her work…oh her work! What a good combo!

Of course the best way to keep up with LS is to follow them on Instagram @ LS slipcovers and on Facebook here!

Good luck Nathan and Laura and all of your family and team, I am so excited and inspired by your willingness to set out on new adventures! Y’all embody the American made spirit!

We have moved in! Everyone on instagram keeps saying it has gone so fast but really for most of the house we just painted, the major changes were in the kitchen and even that was just tile, counters and removing some uppers. No walls have been moved or major work. That being said things did go smoothly and quickly and I am thankful to be sleeping in our new home!

mathislivingroom

This room got new wood ceilings and lighting…most old living rooms did not have overhead lights. So glad to have lights in this room!

The blinds are the Tropical Isle Bamboo Blinds from Select Blinds and they are lined for privacy but not black out lined. The lining is perfect, it is dark enough to help with Texas heat and privacy but not too dark. The color on the blinds is BAMBOO TORTOISE.

And I was worried about the wall color turning out but it came out fine… it is BM EDGECOMB GRAY on walls in entry, living and into dining. . . and SW Pure white on all woodwork and wood ceiling.

leftoverscabinet

And while this room is mostly empty and still needs drapes and a larger rug (I am also eagerly/patiently waiting for custom camelback sofas from LS Slipcovers and her amazing mama Gracie Wilkins to flank fireplace) the piece de resistance HAS ARRIVED. Let me just say y’all I have shopped at and worked with Leftovers Antiques for a long time but never thought I would have one of their treasures like this one below for OUR HOME.

leftoverscab2

When this English Chippendale cabinet with original wavy glass was delivered last week I nearly cried. I know its just a material object, a thing, BUT it is special. Very special. It was handpicked my Michael and Ed and lovingly restored and painted by their top notch guy in England. The wavy glass has survived wars and countless moves and a trip across the ocean to Texas. Hopefully it will survive the Mathis boys. This piece was made for this space and I love Leftovers for bringing it home!

mathischip

You know I have enjoyed putting my little treasures in it, like my fave blue and white and old books, shells and little boxes.

mathischipinside

The piece is antique 1880s English Chippendale. They had it refurbished with an amazing gray blue finish and the inside is a gorgeous dark ink color. Their wonderful guy in England retrofitted it with these old silverware drawers.

mathischipclose

The other treasure in this room is the piano. Not so much the piano (thought it is lovely and glossy black) but the music that comes from it. It sounds so good in this house! I must admit I laid awake many nights before we moved worried about where it would go…there was/is simply no wall for it..this house is almost all windows and doors. A piano in front of a window is a no no because of the weather and tuning but we had no choice and its not an antique steinway so we have broken the rules again (wild ones i know) and we have it in front of the windows in the living room and I LOVE IT! Once it has drapes to keep it company its going to look fantastic and i love seeing it coming down the stairs. I love to hear my kids and husband play it and I am so glad we have a piano in our home.

IMG_1058 (click here to hear the end of a hymn he was playing yesterday; I was being sneaky so its not a great recording but trust me he is wonderful and he is will probably kill me for putting this on the blog;)

mathispiano2

Stay tuned for more. I have hit a bit of a packing/moving wall I must admit but I will try to post often. In the meantime, please please do yourself a favor and follow Leftovers on Facebook and Instagram so you can see what is arriving for their new store displays and the fall Round Top Antiques show. They have two 45 feet jumbo containers full of French and English antiques! Special stuff you can’t buy at Restoration Hardware! They have everything from a SEVEN FOOT marble top Patisserie counter from an old hotel in South of France coming to smalls. Save your pennies and travel miles and come see it all in person!

Round Top is around the corner so begin making plans to come if you have it in mind. And thanks for looking at our transition into our new old home!
