Katie Hackworth, one half of husband-wife design duo H2 Design + Build, would like to thank Pinterest for landing her latest project. “A pin of our previous work led [our clients] back to our website, and they were happy to find that we were based out of Seattle,” she tells us. Hackworth’s clients, “a wonderful couple, both of whom have careers and are impressively raising three children,” own a brick Tudor-style home in Seattle’s Laurelhurst neighborhood. Built in the 1930s, the home was still in its original condition and needed an update. “They loved the original charm of their home but wanted to incorporate modern amenities/appliances and make the space more usable,” she says.
To start, H2 completed a remodel of the first floor of their client’s home, which comprises a kitchen and dining area; “phases two and three are on the horizon,” she tells us. “Every last inch of the house required using,” Hackworth says, but she wanted it to feel spacious. To that end, she focused on creating “clean lines, streamlined pathways, and usable storage.” Functionally, the kitchen and dining room needed to suit “a family of five while cooking a meal, doing homework, playing a game, or all of the above simultaneously!”
Aesthetically, the designers sought to marry the charm of traditional details with the freshness of more-modern elements. “I paid careful attention to incorporate timeless elements of the past: inset drawers and doors with brushed brass details, Calacatta marble, and butcher-block surfaces, for example,” she explains. For added interested, she custom-designed a bar cabinet that “feels somewhat like a family heirloom,” thanks to its architectural details and warm espresso stain.
Though the house has a sense of history, “every surface is new, from the sheetrock to the windows, cabinetry, doors, and light,” the designer says. “We were able to re-stain the stair treads and the original parquet floor, which used to have an ’80s vibe with its brassy undertones,” she adds.
A current of gray tones run through the space, thanks to the kitchen cabinetry, the Fornasetti wallpaper in the dining area, and a few hints of bluish gray in the Persian rug, which is beautifully balanced by the warm tones of bamboo blinds and butcher-block countertops. “My client fell in love with the cabinetry’s warm gray after seeing it in a kitchen we had recently completed. I presented some other options, but it was her clear favorite,” Hackworth says. “I kept the walls a creamy white to freshen up the space and provide a backdrop for all the custom cabinetry to shine.”
When asked what her greatest find for the house was, Hackworth tells us, “In all honesty, I can’t pull out one specific thing. Every little piece plays off one another.” We have to agree.
