H&M; Home's Head Of Design Proves Why You Should Only Live With Things You Love

H&M; Home's Head Of Design Proves Why You Should Only Live With Things You Love

You know when you've found "the one" — that perfectly laid out, naturally lit, minimal-work-required gem of a home. Evelina Kravaev Söderberg knew the moment she walked into her Stockholm, Sweden apartment, and she hasn't considered any others since.

And while the bones of the space are what captured her heart — "As soon as we saw the apartment we fell in love ... We have never even thought of moving," she says — it is the charming, layered feeling she created inside that struck us.

But it took Söderberg some time to get there — years, actually. "Over the years we have slowly built up our collection of furniture, focusing on Mid-Century pieces by designers such as Eames and Aalto, along with vintage finds and pieces that I love from H&M Home," she explains. "It took several years, as I only want to surround myself with objects that I truly love ... and that really just takes time."

Now, seventeen years in, Söderberg says she uses her work as head of home design for the Swedish fashion and home brand H&M to keep the look fresh. "I haven't changed furniture in many years. I update the space with the home accessories (as I like to call the H&M Home products) for seasonal renewal."

Take a tour of Söderberg's labor of love below.

When Söderberg first moved in, the walls were painted in "very irregular colors like yellow and turquoise," she says. A fresh coat of paint was an easy enough fix, and the wood floors, old cupboards and original doors more than made up for any other existing design missteps.

From the outset, Söderberg knew she wanted a neutral space with calm and warm colors. From there, she incorporated mid-century modern and vintage chairs and cabinets as a contrast to the white walls. Layers of textiles add texture to the space.

"It's nice to find a home that you can treat as a blank canvas," Söderberg says.

One of Söderberg's go-to decorating techniques is creating still-life vignettes of her favorite objects. "I put them together, change them all the time, put them back in the cupboard and bring out something else," she says. The skull above is a black clay skull from Mexico, the black glass stone is a paperweight, the black bottle is made by a friend, designer Carina Seth Andersson, and the pot and the cloche are from H&M Home. "Inside the cloche are some vintage typeset letters, which spell the names of our children," Söderberg explains.

Using the extra space in the bedroom, the only major work done in the home was to expand the bathroom, Söderberg says.

"Home is everything to me. It's not just my work, it's my life," Söderberg says. "It is a sanctuary, and at the same time it is a place for celebration and sharing. I love creating pieces for the home during the day, and then coming back to my own space to unwind and enjoy living."
