Some light fixtures do more than just illuminate a space. Here are seven dramatic, room-making pieces we can't get enough of.
Above: This is Jean Prouvé's Potence lamp, spotted on DWR. Prouvé's straightforward, elegantly industrial style has never seemed more current, and you can spot the Potence's dramatic cantilever gracing a huge variety of spaces. (If you're feeling crafty, there's a DIY version here.)
I first spotted Constance Guisset's beautifully dramatic Vertigo suspension lamp in Amandine and Amaury's Paris apartment, and I've been in love ever since. In a brreeze it spins slowly, like a mobile, and creates a lovely pattern of light and shadow on the wall. Here you can see the white and black versions in homes from L'Instant Parisien and Home Adore.
Patrick Townsend's playful Orbit chandelier graces a dining room from A House in the Hills.
The Arco lamp is a time-honored piece of modern design that will make any room a little more interesting and dynamic.
The Dear Ingo chandelier, by Ron Gilad for Moooi, is simple in its concept — a bunch of desk lamps welded to a center ring — but delightfully creepy in its execution. Here you can see black and white versions spotted on Oliver Yaphe and Yatzer.
Ingo Maurer's Zettel'z 5 chandelier presents a sort of delightful chaos: light shining through a series of handwritten notes. If you choose you can replace the papers with some of your own. Spotted on Wallpaper.
This copper pendant lamp by Tom Dixon adds a little bit of style and a little bit of shine to any room. Spotted on Home Stories.
